Our first youth forum unearthed that boredom was the major issue for youth living within the Centenary Suburbs.
The concept of a youth festival incorporating music, BMX and blading, was bandied around. The vision became a reality on 19th August 2001 when the ‘Wicked Day Out’ (WDO) youth festival was put on at Amazons Skate Park in Jindalee.
The event was coordinated, planned, and run by the youth, mostly students from Centenary State High School, under the guidance of Centenary Community Connections.
B-Boy Challenge Breakdancing Workshops were held during the June holidays and the break-dancers performed at Wicked Day Out.
The six-hour event enabled youth to hang out together and showcase the culture and talent of locals although many came from all over Brisbane. The day presented live music, BMX, skateboarding, rollerblading demonstrations and competitions and street art. The headliner band was ‘Blowhard’ a punk rock band.
Support was also provided by the Jindalee Lions Club who provided a BBQ, the Police and Brisbane City Council.
