Mud Army & Street Party for Businesses

Brisbane Flood Recovery

After the 2011 floods CCC coordinated the ‘Sense of Community thank you Mud Army’ day on Saturday 29th January 2011 for the volunteers and local community at Lorikeet Park, Mt Ommaney in conjunction with Jindalee Rotary Australian Day citizenship ceremony.

It was a totally free event – BBQ, spit roasts, drinks, coffees, ice creams, face painting, jumping castles, staged entertainment, roving magician, community and government information on what support was available.
This event was supported by community groups, local businesses, and the Brisbane City Council.

Mud Army Helpers Thanked

CENTENARY Suburbs’ mud army were congratulated for their efforts during the enormous clean-up after last month’s devastating flood with a community event on Saturday.
The day, which was organised by Centenary Community Connections, saw hundreds of people descend on Lorikeet Park, Mt Ommaney, where they were treated to a free feed, live entertainment and activities for the children.
“Today is a chance for everyone who was affected by the flood to relax and say thank you to everyone that helped out”, Centenary Community Connections President Belinda Karnaghan said.

Street Party for Businesses

After this event, we decided that not enough had been done to help the businesses in the flood affected area so on 18th June 2011 we held a Street Party outside the Jindalee Pool and Bowls Club in Yallambee Rd Jindalee. The logistics for this was probably worse than any festival. Closing off a main street was not so easy!

CCC provided all the logistics, rides for the children, roving characters, staged entertainment, and space for businesses to show the community that they were back and ready for trade. Local food shops set up and sold their wares. To finish in the evening deck chairs and blankets were brought by families to enjoy Toy Story 3 shown on an inflatable big screen.

Flood Recovery Month

Finally, a month of activities was held at the Hub as part of the Councils Community Building Recovery Program beginning June 9th to 30th 2012. It included 4 Saturdays of magic and craft workshops (Beyond the Page; Card making; Master the art of Shading and Colouring with Copic Markers), Warhammer tournaments, song writing, a children’s disco and our first Music at the Hub evening.

During the month Stitched up Australia Cross stitch club and the Men’s Shed invited the community to join them also.

This month of activities were possible through funding provided under the Community Development and Recovery Package, which is a joint initiative of the Australian and Queensland Governments under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements.
